River on Oct. 19 for the first time in nearly 100 years.

a notch into the south side of the coffer dam.

By 5 p.m. the coffer dam had been breached first by rivulets of water and then torrents that moved through the notch, eventually carrying the south side of the dam downstream.

Today, the coffer dam is all but gone, and the Sandy has a natural appearance with the expected bends, bars and logjams of a free-flowing river.
